Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi speaking on state television
A defected Libyan diplomat called on the UN to impose a no fly zone over his country to prevent the regime from getting ammunition and mercenaries to crash the uprising that began on February 17.
Ibrahim Dubashi, Deputy Chief of Libyan envoy to the UN, said the UN should also open safe corridors for Libyan civilians to get the very much needed medical and food supplies from Egypt in the East and Tunisia in the west.
He said the International Criminal Court must start investigations against Muammar Al Gaddafi and his family for the crimes they have committed against humanity over the past 42 years of his rule including the crashing of the current uprising by using warplanes.
He called for immediate meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss ways of protecting Libyan civilians.
Dubashi ruled out rumors that Gaddafi have left the country for Venezuela and said if he decided to flee Libya he would go to Chad or Mali in Africa.
Condemned
A veteran Libyan diplomat in Washington said on Monday that members of the Libyan Embassy to the US, officially known as the People's Communication Office in Washington, condemned the way his government was handling the protests in Libya.
Ali Sulaiman Aujali, who became the Ambassador of the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya to the United States on 2009, said the stand of the Libyan mission was taken unanimously by all members of the embassy. He urged the international community to intervene in protecting Libyans in their revolution.
He said he will not resign from his position because he was elected by the people of Libya and would continue to represent the people at this very critical moment.
"I spent more than 40 years in diplomacy and represented the regime in different international capitals, but cannot perform my duty with aerial bombardment of civilians," he said.
He said the incident that promted him to condemn his government publicly was the use of mercenaries in crushing the revolution.
