Khaled Meshaal, Head of the Political Bureau of the Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas, held talks with a number of Egyptian officials led by Minister of Foreign affairs Mohamed Kamel Amro, during a surprise
visit to Cairo, which focused on the theme of reconciliation. The meeting was held at the headquarters of the Muslim Brotherhood and was also attended by Mohamed Badi. They discussed the latest developments on the Palestinian case, including the stalled reconciliation process, in addition to bilateral relations between the two countries. In a press statement Hamas officials said: "Fatah and Hamas agreed to hold a meeting in Cairo directly after Eid al-Fitr; the beginning of September, in order to follow up and complete the reconciliation talks". Mashaal met Maj. Gen. Murad Mowafi, Head of Egyptian Intelligence, and discussed the Palestinian reconciliation file, since the intelligence is primarily responsible for this file.
The Secretary of the Revolutionary Council of Fatah, Ameen Maqboul, said: "it has been initially agreed to meet with Hamas in Cairo directly after the Eid al-Fitr to follow up the reconciliation file and complete the discussions". This file includes the release of prisoners and the solutions for problematic killings in the Palestinian division period. The subject of exchanging Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit for Palestinian prisoners was not discussed during the meeting to. This was the first time Mashaal and his delegation, which included Dr. Musa Abu Marzook, Sami Khater, Mohamed Nasr, and the engineer Nizar Awadallah, visited the headquarters of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, where they met Mohamed Badi, the mentor of the group, despite all their recent frequent visits to Egypt which were surrounded by secrecy, and their movements was under surveillance by the Egyptian national Security and Intelligence. About a week ago, Cairo held a reconciliation meeting for Fatah and Hamas officials and it was agreed to end discussing the file of political detainees before the end of Ramadan.
