Under the patronage of Sheikh Nahyan Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development, Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation (ADMAF) last night launched the first volume of 'The Art of the Emirates', a new book highlighting leading figures helping to shape the Emirati visual arts sector.
The publication is sponsored by Waha Capital.
Launched at a private preview at The Space, TwoFour54, The Art of the Emirates profiles Emirati artists, galleries, foundations and universities, and goes behind the scenes to explore the motivation, passion and vision of some of the UAE's leading arts protagonists.
Filled with in-depth interviews, studio portraits and artworks, this ground-breaking, luxury publication offers insights into the career paths and practice of a diverse range of artists from across the UAE, including: Mohammed Ahmed Ibrahim, Mohammed Kazem, Karima Al Shomaly, Lamya Gargash, Azza Al Qubaisi and Jalal Luqman.
Speaking at the launch, Hoda I. Al Khamis-Kanoo, Founder of the ADMAF, said: "The Art of the Emirates seeks to portray the driving forces behind the UAE visual arts scene - those whose innovative endeavours have contributed to its dynamic growth and laid the foundations for its cultural renaissance; those who have witnessed history and carry the nation's message, vision and story of innovation through their works, many of which can be seen in museums throughout the world today. This book demonstrates that the historical value of a nation is in its pioneers and innovators and that the arts is integral to the cultural development of humanity. It is the heartbeat of its people and the spirit of renewal."
Salem Al Noaimi, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Waha Capital, commented: "The Art of the Emirates is an inspired initiative. It encourages the further development of arts and culture in the UAE by profiling the people and institutions that contribute to our increasingly vibrant scene. It is an honour for Waha Capital to support a project that will help to create and enhance networks, and enable the UAE to glow brighter on the world map."
