Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, Qasr Al Muwaiji was opened yesterday by H.H. Sheikh Tahnoun bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Ruler`s Representative in the Eastern Region, following an extensive restoration scheme. Attending the opening was H.H. Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, National Security Advisor and Deputy Chairman of Abu Dhabi Executive Council.
The opening ceremony was also attended by H.H. Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, H.H. Sheikh Hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan Chief of the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince's Court, H.H. Sheikh Dhiyab bin Zayed Al Nahyan, H.H. Sheikh Omar bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation, H.H. Sheikh Khalid bin Zayed Al Nahyan Chairman of the Board of Zayed Higher Organisation for Humanitarian Care and Special Needs (ZHO), H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, Executive Council Member, Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Transport Department, Sheikhs and officials.
Qasr Al Muwaiji, a symbol of Abu Dhabi's heritage and birthplace of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, was renovated by the Abu Dhabi tourism and Culture Authority.
Sheikh Tahnoun and the other attendees watched a documentary on the history of Qasr Al Muwaiji and glimpses of the life of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and the journey of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan as a statesman and a leader.
Sheikh Tahnoun toured the landmark Qasr Al Muwaiji, as well as the adjoining museum and exhibition, displaying rare collections and telling about the early days and achievements of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Through a comprehensive conservation programme started in the late 1970s and extended in 2009 to include archaeological excavations, preservation measures and restoration interventions, Qasr al Muwaiji has been carefully rehabilitated to emphasise its original architectural features while adapting its original function as a Fort to become a world-class museum
