US Deputy Treasury Secretary Neal Wolin met Lebanese President Michel Sleiman and his government on Tuesday in Beirut. Wolin warned against abuses of the Lebanese financial sector
and tackled measures taken by the Lebanese banking sector to avoid dealing with Iran and Syria.
Wolin expressed during the meetings his confidence in the ability of the Lebanese economy and financial system to face the impact of the Syrian crisis. He also encouraged Lebanese officials to take measures to consolidate Lebanon’s economy and to promote sustainable growth. This included reducing the public debt burden and improving the regulatory system and infrastructure to enhance private sector growth.
Wolin also renewed the American commitment to a sovereign, stable and independent Lebanon.
