Actress says diversity in roles is important
Actress Dorra Zarrouk has generated controversy after revealing she will be playing the role of a belly-dancer in the series Competitions – set to air during the holy month of Ramadan.
Fans
of the Tunisian actress can expect to see her shaking her hips on screen as an exotic dancer in the upcoming television drama.
Usually known for taking more respectable roles, Zarrouk has never played a dancer and went to great lengths to assure the conservative section of the Arab satellite viewing public that the role would not offend.
In a press statement she said her costumes would not be provocative, nor will her moves and remains sensitive to the religious time the series airs.
The actress has embraced the challenge, saying: “As actors, we must take different roles. I have been a doctor, a lawyer, a housewife an intellectual, a pauper and a political activist. Belly dancers do exist in society, so it is important to show the human side of a demonised or stigmatised profession.”
The series follows belly-dancer Rumanah, who finds herself in the midst of a love affair.
"I will present her in a way that is believable to the audience, but at the same time I will put my unique stamp on her as an actress," said Zarrouk.
