Tahra Hamimich
Casablanca – Iman Abdel Nabi

Tahra Hamimich Casablanca – Iman Abdel Nabi Moroccan artists Tahra Hamimich is proud of her identity and culture and wishes her stardom would begin in Morocco with the support of her people as what made her the happiest in Star Academy was the viewers and audiences’ compliments to her. She told Arabstoday about all this and more…
*What’s new in Tahra’s life?
I have recently recorded a single called “I excuse you” written and composed by Moroccan artists Huda Saad, and an Egyptian song called “Yes I love him” which is a duet with singer Mohamed Almaghrebi who was with me on Star Academy. I’ve also been on a number of shows in Cairo for interviews which showed me how much Arabs audiences love me.
*We’ve heard that you are going to record Egyptian religious songs in Ramadan. How did that go?
Yes, I have made a deal with an Egyptian company to record a number of religious songs for Ramadan.
*Why didn’t you do Moroccan religious songs?
Because no one suggested it to me and if any Moroccan production company would have asked me to I would have immediately agreed to it but that didn’t happen. So the Egyptian company “Pose” suggested it and I have been singing religious music from a young age so I said yes.
*Why have you chosen this company in particular?
Because I have a huge Arab and Egyptian audience and “Pose” is a well-known company in Egypt and the Arab world and has worked with many big artists. I would have loved to do this with a Moroccan company but unfortunately Morocco has no production companies or managers but thank God despite that my fan base is huge in and out of Morocco and will find someone to help me there even though I haven’t really had the necessary help and support I need in Morocco.
*How did you get to collaborate with Huda Saad?
Huda is a beautiful and very close friend of mine. She called me as soon as she left Star Academy and gifted me a Moroccan song that she’s written and composed so we recorded it, but unfortunately it was leaked and spread all over the internet because we were supposed to film it in a video clip first and announce its release in a press release but it’s ok because it was a huge success without filming or marketing it.
*We heard about a duet between you and an Egyptian artist. Where has this project come up to?
Yes that’s true, it is with my Star academy fellow Mohamed Al Maghrebi who is a great artist with a beautiful voice. He’s written the song and will put it in his new album.
*you have worked as a shop assistant, so how come you didn’t finish your education?
I only worked during the summer holidays to depend on myself and fill up my spare time but I did finish my education but I stopped to take part in Star Academy.
*Your sister has in the past said that many men came to propose to you, but that you are looking for the perfect husband. What are his characteristics?
Only God is perfect, but I am looking for a man to love me and make my dream of becoming a successful star come true, and someone to trust me and stand by me in life.
*If your husband asked you to quit, would you?
If he was worth it and made sure I had a comfortable and stable life then I would, as eventually I will be a mother. But of course I do hope that my husband does not make me choose between singing and him, because I want someone to love my singing career the same way I love him.
*”I excuse you” has been very successful so why didn’t you record a video clip for it?
I am currently preparing to film it actually with a Moroccan director and it will be produced by an American company who have heard it and liked it through YouTube and suggested that we film it.
You have the same style as Huda Saad even with singing. What do you think?
I think we each have our own style, but I am Moroccan so it is only natural for me to sing in my accent and I feel happy when I see a Moroccan artist singing in her Moroccan accent too. My priority is Moroccan singing.
*What do you think of this year’s Moroccan star Academy contestants Yasmeen and Kareema?
I have been very busy so have not been able to watch it this year but I wish them both luck and I hope they find someone or a company to support them and wish for the same thing for myself.
*You have said that an Egyptian company will produce your work, so why don’t you settle down in Egypt and sing there?
I am Moroccan and I hope one day someone will support me here in my home as there are many beautiful voices here and I do travel between Cairo and Beirut but I prefer to start in my own country and grow then launch myself to other Arab countries and not the opposite.
*Do you regret taking part in Star Academy?
No I don’t and I thank Rula Saad for everything she has done; many say I shouldn’t thank her as she is the reason for pushing me away from the show, but my audience have known and loved me through the show and that’s what’s important to me and thank God I did not have to work hard to make them love me; I was just genuine and myself all along.
*Do you mean that Rula had something to do with you leaving the show?
I don’t know and it doesn’t matter to me whether she meant for me to leave the show or to hurt me or even if she hated me, that’s her own business and I can’t judge her for it.
*Why don’t you take part in concerts and festivals?
I don’t really like taking part in them just for the sake of it as at the moment I don’t have that many songs and I don’t like to sing other people’s songs, except for the big stars like Um Kulthum, so I’d rather wait so that I can sing my own songs.
*Which singers from your own age do you listen to?
All singers from my generation are talented and I listen to but I listen to Shireen Abdel Wahab a lot, I love her voice and song choices and I also love Nancy Ajram as you can really feel her emotions when she sings.
