Tiesto, one of the biggest names in dance music, on Monday released without warning a new mix album that is inspired by the New York club scene.
The Dutch DJ announced the album through a video sent via social media that showed him in a helicopter observing Manhattan's iconic skyline.
Tiesto said that New York, long a global capital for music, has become an especially important hub in the worldwide boom in electronic dance music.
"The current club scene is thriving and on any given night there's a world-class DJ in town. It's hard not to be inspired by this great city," Tiesto said on the video.
The album is the fourth installment of Tiesto's "Clublife" series of mix albums, which have come out once a year since 2012.
The first mix album focused on Las Vegas, where Tiesto has been the resident DJ at the Hakkasan nightclub, with the follow-up editions inspired by Miami and Stockholm.
The exact influence of the cities on each mix album is open to interpretation. The New York edition shows pop influences and reaches for catchy hooks on original tracks by Tiesto such as "Butterflies" and "Change Your World."
Tiesto made his name in the Dutch trance scene before rising to the forefront of the boom in electronic music in the 2000s, becoming one of the first DJs to headline arena-size concerts in the same fashion as pop performers.
Tiesto grew a global audience in 2004 when he DJed at the opening ceremony of the Athens Olympics.
He also has scored hits with songs such as "Feel It In My Bones," which features the Canadian duo Tegan and Sara, and his remix of John Legend's "All of Me" for which Tiesto won a Grammy this year.
