It was on a small island off the coast of Dubai, in a setting inspired by the Arabian Nights, that Karl Lagerfeld chose to present on Tuesday night the Chanel Cruise Collection 2014-2015.
It was a collection of oriental inspiration, with models wearing heavy silver jewellery, and robes reinterpreting the checkerboard pattern of the keffiyeh.
"This is my idea of an idealised East, but East for everyone,” Karl Lagerfeld said. "There is no folklore. This is an idea that can inspire the East in terms of fashion.”
Guests including actresses Vanessa Paradis and Tilda Swinton and Princess Ameera Al-Taweel, wife of Saudi billionaire Walid bin Talal, arrived on small dhows to the island.
They walked among the tents, amid the magical spectacle of hundreds of small candles placed on the sand with the sound of a traditional lute player in the backdrop.
In a large hall built for the occasion, and whose facade was reminiscent of the symbol of the house, guests - including an elegant majority clad in Chanel - were placed around low tables decorated with lanterns or on cushions to watch the parades. Asked why he chose Dubai to organise for the first time, a parade, Karl Lagerfeld said that, "this is the world of tomorrow.”
"After all, this is the city where there is the highest building in the world... it is a modern reality that goes beyond the modern reality of the old Europe. Here, everything is new,” he said, after greeting Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Aviation Authority and President of Emirates Airlines, who welcomed him to the city.
