The various Fashion Weeks around the globe dictate the fashions and trends of the following season, yet the focus isn't just on the ready-to-wear collections. Each runway show reveals a prominent hair and makeup style. For spring/summer 2016, Milan went all out in the beauty department using flashy pops of colors on the eye lids, and sometimes beyond, with an XXL colored liner.
Eye-popping colors
In New York and London, color was already a definite trend that took on a whole new level in Milan with beauty looks pushed to the limits of eccentricity. At Missoni, color liner began at the root of the eyelashes and ended right under the eyebrows, whereas at Max Mara, color took over the eyebrow entirely. At Fendi, liner was thinner and resembled a second eyebrow.
Though the season's styles were particularly focused on the eyes with offbeat looks, lips were not forgotten. Red-wine hues are out and gave way to a number of other red shades. At Emporio Armani, the lipstick shade was very dark whereas John Richmond favored an orange-tinted red. Most designers opted for nude lips au naturel or rose-tinted, although Prada stood out with gold tinted lips.
A season au naturel
Next season, skin is allowed to breathe with very little cover. First seen in the fall/winter 2015-2016 shows, the natural trend should come out in full force by summer. Skin gets left untouched, in appearance at least. The face is structured and bright (Missoni, Salvatore Ferragamo, Trussardi), with a few designers opting for a touch of blush on the cheekbones (Dolce & Gabbana, Emporio Armani, Giorgio Armani), while others preferred the unkempt, just-got-out-of-bed look (MSGM and Iceberg).
Hair: between nonchalance and polished
Just like in New York, the middle parting was popular throughout Milan Fashion Week with a casual, almost unkempt flair at Emporio Armani, Iceberg, John Richmond and Trussardi in particular.
On the contrary, some designers preferred a more rigorous look with severe slick-backed hair with at times a wet-look effect. This was seen in particular at Salvatore Ferragamo.
At Giorgio Armani, the layered bangs were kept long and side-swept to the right. Two fashion houses stood out: MSGM and Dolce & Gabbana. MSGM went for an ultra-short bowl cut inspired by Jeanne d'Arc and the latter played with accessories from scarves to headbands.
