Tamarind, the first Indian restaurant to get a Michelin-star
London - Arab Today

London has caught up to the likes of New York and San Francisco with the launch of a new delivery service that will allow foodies to eat Michelin-starred meals in their sweatpants while watching the telly.

In recent years, the US dining scene has expanded the notion of traditional delivery service beyond greasy pizza and Chinese take-out via collaborations with popular restaurants and start-up catering services.

Starting this fall, the trend will make landfall across the pond in London, where the foodie elite will likewise be able to order meals from a selection of Michelin-starred restaurants including the popular eatery Tamarind of Mayfair -- the first Indian restaurant to earn a star from the esteemed red guide -- and Benares, also a Michelin-starred Indian restaurant in the city.

For the service, dubbed Supper, meals are delivered on scooters that have been specially retrofitted with custom-made thermal boxes for keeping foods at the optimal temperature.

Founder Peter Georgiou says the business was born after searching in vain for delivery options from his favorite high-end restaurants in the city, a service he had grown accustomed to after living in New York for four years.

Indeed, the likes of UberEats and David Chang have been shaking up the take-out dining scene in the Big Apple.

After launching in Los Angeles and Barcelona, UberEats expanded into New York this spring delivering foods from popular eateries such as Num Pang and Scarpetta to tired, overworked New Yorkers in need of a night in with a glass of wine, and trashy television.

The David Chang-backed venture Maple also launched at about the same time. Only instead of striking partnerships with existing restaurants, meals are prepared in-house by executive chef Soa Davies, whose culinary street cred comes from stints at Le Bernardin, while Chang of Momofuku fame acts as chief culinary officer.

Supper, which is already operational in a restricted zone in central London, is expected to officially launch in September.
