Type 2 diabetes sufferers are insulin dependent.
A man has cured his diabetes in 11 days with a ‘starvation diet’, of minimal food and water.
Richard Doughty, 59, said he was
‘shocked’ after a routine examination revealed he had Type 2 diabetes.
He said, “I have always been a healthy weight, 5feet 7inches, and 10stones 7lb. I had no family history of diabetes, ate a healthy diet, never smoked and I did not have a sweet tooth.”
After conducting his own research on the internet, he came across a low-calorie diet by Newcastle University, consisting of meal replacement shakes, soup, and a combination of various vegetables.
The plan involved consuming 600 calories from soups, and 200 calories from green vegetables, plus three litres of water a day.
It was devised by Professor of Medicine and Metabolism Roy Taylor, at the University of Newcastle, on the basis that the illness is caused by fat clogging up the liver and pancreas.
The study behind the plan showed that by going into starvation mode the body broke down the fat cells to release energy.
This led to the organs becoming unclogged, and allowing the hormone-producing cells to function correctly.
Professor Taylor said, “While it has long been believed that Type 2 diabetes will steadily get worse, we have shown we can reverse the condition.”
