Costa Navarino offers a breathtaking seaside landscape
Costa Navarino, the prime sustainable destination in Messinia, southwest Peloponnese, is encouraging guests to enhance their artistic knowledge by experiencing the destination’s brand new contemporary
art platform, which will be officially launched on June 8.
“Costa Navarino: Engaging Art” is an innovative art concept aiming to become a permanent platform for contemporary visual arts and an international meeting point for artists and art enthusiasts. During their stay at The Romanos, a Luxury Collection Resort or at The Westin Resort Costa Navarino, guests can explore and actively participate in the world of contemporary art.
Four in-residence artists are showcased in the first exhibition, entitled “60 picks per minute”, which will have its official opening on June 8 and will last until the beginning of October. The exhibition is curated by the conceptual artist Dimitrios Antonitsis. The artists will in turn present their work in solo exhibitions, while at the same time will interact with guests and dynamically engage them in the creative process of their new work being created during in situ workshops. A key element is how two very distinct practices, contemporary art and traditional handicraft, are interwoven and bring to life this unique combination. Hosted at the emblematic Westin Tower, the exhibition brings to life this dynamic interaction of artwork amidst a stunning environment. Viewers and participants can develop their own connotations as active observers as well as co-creators.
“The exhibition brings together two different and very distinctive art practices assuming an identity greater than the sum of its constituent parts, handicraft and contemporary art. By infusing "handmadeness" into photography, sculpture and painting, new readings will be revealed. This is a challenging experiment as guests participate in the creation of several pieces of art by the artists-in-residence and explore together the many approaches of folklore and traditional craftsmanship”, Antonitsis said.
Art has been a fundamental aspect of Costa Navarino, since the very beginning. It is prominent throughout Navarino Dunes, the destination’s first resort area, through a unique collection of original works from the 17th to the 19th century, along with the works of acclaimed contemporary Greek and international artists, and pieces by upcoming artists inspired by the Messinian nature and the environmental practices applied at the destination. These works of art are showcased throughout the two hotels, the restaurants, Anazoe Spa, The Dunes Golf Club and the conference centre House of Events.
“60 picks per minute” is supported by the ILEANA TOUNTA Contemporary Art Center and sponsored by: B&O, Karavias & Associates, Estée Lauder, Autounion. Communication sponsors: Kathimerini, K, SKAI.
