New collection is block-printed by ‘chippa’ caste
Virginia - Arab Today

New collection is block-printed by ‘chippa’ caste A new collection of fair trade, hand-block table linen will make its debut at the NY NOW home and lifestyle fair in New York on August 17. The vibrant linens, by US retailer Jubilee Traders, are handcrafted in a small artisan workshop in Sanganer, outside of Jaipur, India, using a combination of eco-friendly dye and traditional block printing techniques. Four new patterns for fall and winter will premiere at NY NOW.
The 100% cotton tablecloths, napkins, place mats, and table runners are available in 15 versatile and colorful patterns. Jubilee Traders says each piece is unique and handmade, as well as being machine washable.
“Each product represents an artisan who is using their skills to support their families, educate their children, and build toward a future of dignity and hope. By purchasing Jubilee Traders linens, customers are joining our efforts to change the world for the better,” said co-owner of Jubilee Traders Paul Culler.
The art of hand-block printing has existed in Jaipur for generations and many of the artisans originally belonged to the traditional “chippa” or hand-block printing caste. Jubilee Traders, which is certified by the Fair Trade Federation of North America (FTF), was established to keep the art of hand-block printing alive and was purchased by Paul and Lois Culler in 2012. Since then, they have expanded their customer base and given more work to the artisans in India by refining existing designs and adding more patterns based on demand and tabletop trends.
Jubilee Traders will be one of over 50 fair trade manufacturers exhibiting their products at NY NOW, Jacob K. Javits Convention Centre, New York, NY, August 17-20, 2013.
