A group of 30 classic cars arrived at Sharjah Heritage Days (SHD), the day before yesterday, from Sharjah Old Cars Club, in an effort to promote Sharjah Heritage Days. The club's cars joined the 10 cars present in the square since the first day of SHD.
The classic car parade was led by 1979 model-Chevrolet Corvette driven by Sharjah Old Cars Club's Vice Chairman Salim bin Salim Al Suwaidi. Among the cars was an amazing 1927 model Ford, in addition to a collection of antique cars.
Salim bin Salim Al Suwaidi, Sharjah Old Cars Club's Vice Chairman and Head of Technical Committee, said that the club has 1700 members consisting of UAE, GCC, and Arab nationals, both male and female, who own old cars. He added, "The approved classic car must be a 1979 model or older. We have recently have suggested approving cars from 1983 and older. The registered car must comply with the Ministry of Interior's terms and conditions as well as with the applicable laws."
Speaking about the club, he said, "Sharjah Old Cars Club was opened in 2008 by H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. It is the first and oldest in the country, and among the first club's to issue classic car plates. The club provides an official umbrella for classic car lovers and aims to promote vintage car culture and encourage national sand residents to join this platform. The club has a five-year plan to facilitate promotion of this culture based on an initial policy that does not depend on difficult standards, in order to attract the largest number possible of classic car lovers. The club is a subsidiary of the Sharjah Sports Council, and aims to spread awareness among young people about safe use of the road through lectures and seminars."
Speaking about the classic car parade, he said, "This parade aims to promote Sharjah Heritage Days. We are present, also, in Sharjah Heritage Days in Central and Eastern districts of Sharjah".
Abdulaziz Al Musallam, Chairman of Sharjah Heritage Institute, said, "The participation of Sharjah Old Cars Club in this parade adds a beautiful touch to the activities of Sharjah Heritage Days. Every year, SHD looks for something new to attract a bigger audience. The vintage car parade kicked off from the club's headquarters making its way to the Heritage Days' venue at the Heart of Sharjah, and attracted the attention of residents, audience and road users along the way.
He added that people were wondering about the destination of the parade, and they got to know the parade is on the way to Sharjah Heritage Days, so it was a great promotional tool. Upon their arrival at the square, the classic cars joined the other old cars on display since the first day of Heritage Days. People flocked to take photos with these rare cars that cannot be seen except on certain occasions, including Heritage Days.
