Apple CarPlay
The company is working on an aftermarket solution for bringing the iPhone to car dashboards and hopes to be able to offer something by the end of the year. Apple CarPlay, officially unveiled at this week's Geneva Motor Show is essentially a form
of iOS -- the company's mobile operating system -- for in-car use.
If a car supports CarPlay, plugging in an iPhone will give the driver seamless access to a host of the smartphone's features from turn-by-turn navigation to voice calls and its music library. Simply use the car's touch screen or speak directly to Siri with voice commands to cue up a song, check the route ahead or dictate a text message.
A host of car companies have signed up to supporting the technology in the future, including BMW, Ford, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, Kia, Nissan, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota, but the first cars that will hit the streets with CarPlay on board -- the Ferrari FF, Mercedes C Class and the Volvo XC90 -- were on show this week in Geneva.
And now Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that, as well as its brand new cars, it is also working on a way to retro-fit CarPlay to its existing vehicles. Which is good news in particular for anyone that has already ordered a 2014 C Class.
However, Samsung Galaxy SIV-owning Mercedes drivers shouldn't lose heart. Android is also developing its own in-car tech, and Mercedes has also confirmed that when the new system is also ready for market, that it will be supporting it, too.
