Palestinian protestors wave their national flag and hold portraits of Samer al-Issawi
Around 5,000 Palestinian prisoners imprisoned in Israeli jails on Tuesday went on a hunger strike for one day in solidarity with administrative detainees, officials said. Zeiad Abu Ein, deputy minister of prisoners' affairs told Xinhua the
hunger strike of all prisoners in all Israeli jails was made to back administrative detainees, who have been going on a hunger strike for four weeks.
"The aim of the one-day general hunger strike was made also to pressure the Israeli prisons' service to respond to the administrative detainees' demands to end keeping them in prison without trial," said Abu Ein.
The Palestinian official said the Israeli prisons' authorities "haven't so far responded to the legal demands of the prisoners, mainly stop using force against them and improving their detention 's conditions."
About 130 prisoners out of 180 administrative detainees have been going on hunger strike for 27 days, according to the Palestinian Prisoners' Club Association statement.
They are demanding an immediate end of holding them behind the bars without a court trial.
Abu Ein warned that neglecting the prisoners' demand may lead to more escalation in prisons and any escalation would be reflected on the ground in the Palestinian territories.
Since 2000, Israel had issued 23,000 administrative detentions against Palestinian activists. Administrative detention is usually six months, but most of them time Israel illegally renew this detention to senior activists without a trail.
