Netflix says an online survey suggests more than half of U.S. respondents are willing to exercise while binge watching instead of sitting on the couch. One thousand people were questioned about their viewing habits for the poll Dec. 21-23.
In the same survey, 45 percent of respondents agreed they would be more motivated to exercise if they had access to their favorite TV shows on-demand and commercial-free while working out.
Sitcoms were the favorite genre to watch while working up a sweat, with 36 percent of respondents choosing humor over serialized dramas, which earned 27 percent of the vote.
About 24 percent of respondents said they would prefer to work out to sci-fi/fantasy shows while 20 percent said reality shows were their favorite exercise backgrounds.
"I call it the Netflix fitness effect," Harley Pasternak, a celebrity fitness expert and New York Times bestselling author, said in a statement Monday. "My clients have been working out with Netflix for years. It makes cardio feel easier and less boring.
"Whether you're watching at home doing resistance exercises or taking your tablet or phone to the gym, Netflix gives people an extra reason to sweat. ... Not only does it make your workouts easier, but you end up looking forward to them more. If you can only watch 'Breaking Bad' when you're on the treadmill, you're going to find yourself wishing there were more hours in the day to work out."
