Pornography ‘threatens society’ according to pro-Sharia activists

Pornography ‘threatens society’ according to pro-Sharia activists Nouakchott – Mohammed Abeidy Sherif Anti-pornography campaigners in Mauritania have demanded the country’s central communications authority block Internet porn, threatening to sue if their demands are not met. “No to Pornography!” activists , aiming to apply stricter Sharia law in Mauritania, claimed in a statement that widely available pornography “threatened society.”
The group claimed explicit content was easily viewed at public Internet cafes in cities across the country “with no censorship or legal oversight.”
Pro-Sharia campaigners have also claimed public pornography represented a “direct violation of both the constitution and the law,” citing child protection laws as a defence.
The country’s Adam Organisation meanwhile threatened to sue if a ban was not in place within 20 days.
Both organisations have stated their intentions to launch a full-scale grass-roots campaign, consisting of street protests and peaceful sit-ins.
