Protest against an "unfair and illegal decision"
Thirty teachers were sacked from three Catholic schools in Rabat. This move follows a law imposed by the secretary general of Catholic education in Morocco,
which stipulates that all teachers should signed a temporary contract renewable - or not - at the end of each academic year.
Many teachers had spent more that twenty years in the same institution. They demonstrated in front of the three schools to protest against an "unfair and illegal decision".
Despite the Employment Ministry's efforts to impose respect of law and the agreement signed between the schools and the syndicate, the Catholic schools went through with their decision and fired 30 employees.
The protesters denounced the lack of action from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to impose the law, especially after Moroccan teachers were sexually abused last Thursday in Jeanne d'Arc school. The assault led to the injury of one of the teachers who was quickly transferred in an ambulance to the Ibn Sina University Hospital.
The sacked teachers considered this decision a violation to the Moroccan sovereignty. They claim that the schools' management are humiliating them. They also said it defies Moroccan employment laws. The Catholic schools management refused to dialogue, despite being invited twice to the negotiation table by the Moroccan Minister of Employment.
One of the schools' headteachers found that all the locks and keys to his school had been changed, preventing him from entering the building.
