About 5,000 students and staff have been evacuated after a dangerous chemical spill at a university in Sydney, the New South Wales (NSW) Police said on Thursday.
The spill of chemicals at the main tower of the University of Technology
Sydney occurred before 11 a.m. (local time) on Thursday.
Police said emergency services were called to the university on Broadway after the incident involving the storage of a chemical has become potentially unstable.
"The Police Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit along with HAZMAT ( hazardous materials) teams from Fire & Rescue NSW are responding to the incident," police said in a statement.
A NSW Fire and Rescue spokeswoman told the Australian Associated Press (AAP) three towers of the university on Broadway have been evacuated and police bomb squad experts are working out the best way to neutralize the substance.
