United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) campus in Al Ain
The United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) has welcomed a Japanese delegation to the university campus in Al Ain to discuss mutual cooperation in the field of higher education. The Japanese delegation consisted of representatives
from 11 Japanese universities, Mr. Shigeru Yamaguchi, a representative from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in Japan, and representatives from the Japan International Cooperation Centre (JICE), which recently established an office in Abu Dhabi.
Mr. Yamaguchi expressed his keenness on promoting relations between Japan and Abu Dhabi in the area of education and scientific expertise, in order to contribute to the achievement of the future objectives of both parties. He said, "We are keen to strengthen partnerships with scientific and academic institutions in Abu Dhabi, through exchange of experiences, student and faculty exchanges, and joint educational projects." He delivered a short presentation to the UAEU Deans and administrators, giving an overview of the higher education system in Japan and international students in Japan.
Prof. Mohamed Albaili, Deputy VC for Academic Affairs (Provost) at UAEU, said that relations between Abu Dhabi and Japan have advanced in recent years, backed by efforts to promote partnership in the fields of economy, education and culture.
Prof. Albaili emphasised that shifting from an oil-based to a knowledge-based economy requires a concentration today on the development of education. He presented an overview of UAEU, its development process towards achieving international accreditation, and current opportunities available at the university.
The delegation will also be exhibiting at the NAJAH Higher Education and Careers Exhibition, and will explore ways in which U.A.E. and Japanese universities can collaborate to enhance cultural and educational exchange.
The College of Science at UAEU, for example, sends a team of 10 students every year to participate in internships at Japan Oil Development Company (JODCO), and the UAEU student 'Sakura Club', established in 2008, focuses on cultural exchange between Japan and the U.A.E..
