Dozens of staff protested outside the Nablus directorate
Nablus – Arab Today
Over 100 employees of the Nablus Directorate of Education on Monday announced they had quit the General Union of Teachers in protest over its recently-signed
agreement with the Palestinian Authority.
Dozens of staff protested outside the Nablus directorate, a district branch of the education ministry, carrying signs including "No to the oppressive agreements against administrative staff" and "Teachers and administrators are the core of the educational process."
"We are 125 employees and we announce our official withdrawal from the union because it is neglecting us," said directorate employee Izhaq al-Samiri.
Palestinian Authority caretaker prime minister Rami Hamdallah on Thursday said his government had signed an agreement with the teachers' union after it threatened strike action.
Al-Samiri said the agreement offered teachers a bonus of 5 percent, but that administrative staff working in directorates were excluded from the bonus.
He said administrative staff would form a new union supported by the Palestine Liberation Organization.
Teachers' union spokesman Sada Istaye said the PA was responsible for administrative staff working in directorates. He urged the PA to review the agreement to include all education staff.
Staff from the Qalqiliya directorate of education collectively resigned on Sunday from the teachers' union over their exclusion from the agreement.
