World marks on March 8 World Woman's Day to highlight women's social, economic and political achievements, as well as future endeavours. The day also celebrates the deeds of women who had campaigned and strongly advocated
the women's rights.
Nora Khalifa Al Suwaidi, Director of the General Women's Union said in a statement on this occasion that "I congratulate all women across the globe on advent of the great event, World Woman's Day, on which the whole world celebrates the achievements of women. We appreciate the women gains at global level in general and UAE level in particular.
She said that the UAE national woman is a partner in the development process, citing the full support to women outlined by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, a legacy being sustained by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Members of Supreme Council, Their Highnesses Ruler of Emirates and His Highness General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
Al Suwaidi noted that the clarity of leadership's vision on making Emirati women a core of the development process, was behind the successes attained by Emirati women in a record period compared to their counterparts in other countries worldwide.
She said there are four Emirati woman ministers in the Cabinet, four women judges, two public prosecutors and 17 woman assistant public prosecutors and marriage officials, and three ambassadors. Emirati women also occupy 60 per cent of the technical jobs such as medicine, teaching, pharmacology and nursing. They have also joined the regular forces such as armed forces, police and customs.
Al Suwaidi referred to the recent directives of the UAE President on provision of houses, plots and financing to build houses for Emirati widows and those married to foreigner husbands. She also noted that the UAE President issued a decree entitling children of foreign fathers born to Emirati women to apply to access Emirati nationality when at 18. The children will enjoy the health and education services as Emiratis.
