US Ambassador to Lebanon Maura Connelly congratulated the students
More than 600 Lebanese women were awarded an English diploma after taking part in a programme called “English for Women”, funded by the US embassy to Lebanon. US Ambassador to Lebanon Maura
Connelly participated in the graduation ceremony to congratulate the students.
She said: “I wish women were more present in all aspects of society. I have noticed that there is not a single woman in the Lebanese government.”
The US ambassador praised the work of the association “English for Women”, which has allowed more than 3000 women to learn English in Lebanon in less than four years.
“Women from different backgrounds and generations have signed up for this programme. Some want to help their children with their English homework, others want to be able to communicate when they travel. Their common ground is that they all want to improve their lives and give their children a chance for a brighter future,” explained the US ambassador.
The association’s president, Lokman Slim, pointed out that his organisation is a unique programme specifically dedicated to Lebanese people.
