The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, DEWA, is building a "green vehicle" workshop that adopts the latest international technologies to conserve electricity and water consumption, at an estimated cost of Dh98 million.
According to DEWA, the green vehicle workshop, which is the largest of its kind in the region, has followed the highest sustainability standards in construction, selection of materials and operations, and has been designed according to the criteria of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, LEED, of the US Green Building Council Institute.
During a visit to review the progress of the workshop's buildings and facilities, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA, stressed the importance of adhering to the highest standards of security and safety across all aspects of work, in accordance with DEWA's strategy to adopt the highest standards of security and safety in all its projects.
"This important project is part of DEWA's operational plan and supports the future increase of its fleet of vehicles. This is part of our strategy to protect the environment, we made sure this workshop is built according to green-building standards. DEWA places great importance on the environment in all its projects, whether to produce electricity and water, or in its day-to-day operations. This supports our commitment to the Green Economy for Sustainable Development initiative launched by Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to achieve the sustainable development of Dubai and establish the emirate as a global hub for trade, finance, tourism, and green economy. It also supports DEWA's vision to become a sustainable world-class utility," said Al Tayer.
He added, "The new vehicle workshop adds to DEWA's Sustainable Building in Al Quoz, which is the first sustainable government building in the UAE and the largest government building in the world with a Platinum rating for green buildings. The vehicle workshop adopts the latest international technologies to conserve electricity and water consumption. DEWA has followed the highest sustainability standards in construction, selection of material, and operations of the workshop. This supports our strategy to achieve the sustainable development of Dubai and achieve a better future for generations to come." DEWA owns a fleet of 3,330 different types of vehicles which includes light and heavy vehicles, drilling equipment, and other special equipment. The total area of the vehicle workshop is 280,761 square feet. It includes a workshop for light and heavy vehicles, and special equipment. It is equipped with the latest equipment and machines, with an accident repair workshop, paint shop, washing area, car wash, management office, and spare parts stores. The workshop uses the latest sustainable technologies for lighting, air conditioning, and water use, and it's expected to be completed by the end of March.
