China summoned US Ambassador Terry Branstad on Sunday to protest the “unreasonable detention” of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou, who was arrested in Canada last week and is awaiting extradition to the United States.
Sttae-run news agency Xinhua reported late Sunday that Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng made “strong protests” against the detention of Meng, who is the Huawei’s chief financial officer and daughter of founder Ren Zhengfei.
Meng, 46, faces charges of conspiracy to commit fraud for allegedly misleading several banks over Huawei’s dealings with Iran.
Huawei is accused of sending US-origin technology to Iran, in violation of ongoing sanctions from the US government.
On Friday, Canada’s Justice Department asked the courts to deny Meng bail. The decision was postponed until Monday.
