The 58 members of the Executive Board of UNESCO, chaired by Michael Worbs (Germany), will interview candidates for the post of Director-General on Wednesday, over two days, at UNESCO headquarters.
At the top of the list of the candidates for this position is HE Dr. Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kuwari, Advisor at the Emiri Diwan and the State of Qatar's candidate to the Post of the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) , who will present its program on Thursday and listen to all theses and questions submitted by the members in order to answer them within the specified period of time.
The program of the Qatari candidate electoral program, under the theme "Towards a New Start for UNESCO", reflects his experience in the field of cultural work and cultural development, where he seeks to promote the role of the organization and expand its interests and activate its global presence in cooperation among all and emphasize the importance of education as well as to work to bridge the gap between the countries of the world by providing culture and education opportunities for all, and to heal this rift and push for clear action through cultural diplomacy, the development of science, and the preservation of world heritage, especially in places of conflict in the world.
Dr. Al-Kuwari also calls for the need for a balance in the relations among world's countries , enriching the values of dialogue, eliminating all forms of clash of civilizations, and achieving the values of multiculturalism and dialogue among civilizations by eliminating the suffering of today's world, which is suffering under poverty, ignorance, wars and violence.
He emphasizes the significance of education in building awareness of peace and drying up the sources of terrorism that arise in the hotbeds of tension and in the poor areas and areas where ignorance prevails.
Candidates from Azerbaijan, China, Egypt, France, Guatemala, Iraq, Lebanon and Vietnam will also present their programs over the two days.
In a statement today, UNESCO announced that the interviews will be broadcast on the Internet with high technology through http://fr.unesco.org/executive-board/dg-candidates-2017, which will also display the schedule of interviews with Members, as well as other information.
UNESCO also provides a dedicated press space so that each candidate can communicate with them immediately after the interview. UNESCO will also provide an audio-visual version of these interviews in the Press Service, and will provide SDI 1080i50 (HQ) SDI callers, provided that they are equipped with the necessary tools.
The interviews will be available on the Internet on the afternoon of April 28. The Executive Board nominates the Director-General, while the General Conference appoints him for a four-year term. Interviews will be conducted with the nine members during the 201st session of the Council.
The person nominated by the Executive Board will be selected after a secret ballot during the 202nd Session of the Council in October 2017. The President of the Council shall inform the General Conference at its 39th session, in November 2017, of the candidate chosen( he or she ) . The General Conference shall elect this person nominated by the Executive Board after a secret ballot.
