Dubai - Arabstoday

A Dubai surgical team cured a 32-year-old Emirati woman of a chronic condition affecting her voice with the help of a piece of equipment never used in the UAE before. The team from Al Baraha Hospital used an artificial respiration device in their treatment of the patient, who was suffering from acute hoarseness due to a virus on her vocal cords. The surgery was led by Dr Ahmad Al Emmadi, ear, nose and throat (ENT) consultant and technical director of the hospital. "The new technological device helped the team to make this operation," he said. "Such accurate surgeries require great efforts. Article continues below Vibrations "The Ministry of Health used a new artificial respiration device with high performance vibrations which helped the patient breath normally causing no side effects to her vocal cords or respiration canal." Dr Mujahid Mohammad Abdul Fattah, the hospital's director of anesthesia and intensive care, said the new method served to protect patients against tumors in their vocal cords or throat. The new device means the surgeons can avoid using laryngeal tubes, which obscure their vision during treatment. It involves the use of a thin catheter with a diameter of 3mm to help the patient breath through an artificial ventilator. As a result the patient is able to speak directly after the operation without a recovery period. Transferred cases Hospital director Ahmad Al Khadeem said the case was one of a number transferred from the northern emirates, this one from Al Fujairah Hospital. Out of the 100 monthly cases about 20 require surgery. Al Khadeem lauded the efforts of the ENT medical team and their use of cutting edge techniques in the interest of patients.
