Health authorities confirmed 17 cases of measles in the central province of Sofala in Mozambique after running analyses in 90 people along the province, the Mozambique News Agency AIM reported on Tuesday. The provincial health director, Marina Karagianis, said the cases were confirmed in the districts of Gorongosa, Chemba, Caia and Maringue, just after the national vaccination week against measles was carried out in Mozambique. "We are monitoring the situation in order to eradicate measles in the country in general and in the province in particular. From the 90 analyses carried out 17 were confirmed positive", Marina said. In addition to this case Marina alerted that the rainy season is starting to provoke an increase of diarrhea cases in Machanga and Marringue districts, and the authorities are already in alert to prevent any cholera outbreak. These measures are a number of campaigns through dissemination of prevention messages, distribution of products for water treatment and the distribution of material and allocation of health operation teams in health unities.
