Arab League (AL) Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit underscored the importance of pooling up the international community’s efforts to hammer out an appropriate peaceful settlement for the Libyan crisis, AL spokesman Mahmoud Afifi said in a Thursday statement.
Abul Gheit made the remarks during his participation in a high-level meeting for which the United Nations chief has called in order to discuss the situation in Libya.
The meeting is held on the sidelines of the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The AL chief welcomed during the meeting the action plan prepared by the UN and introduced by its envoy for Libya with the aim of resolving the Libyan crisis and continuing the transitional period in the conflict-torn country in line with the Sukhairat Agreement.
In this regard, he affirmed the importance of ending the state of division besetting Libya and maintaining confidence among the Libyan parties in a way that leads to a unified Libyan state.
Meanwhile, Abul Gheit reviewed the AL’s vision on the crisis as well as the efforts it exerts in order to help reach a peaceful settlement that meets the aspirations of the Libyan people.
On that score, he pointed to the AL’s initiative that resulted in forming the quartet on Libya, comprising the United Nations, the European Union, the African Union in addition to the Arab League.
