Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano on Monday told his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry over phone his government's plan to nominate a new ambassador in Cairo.
Alfano looked forward for the approval of the Egyptian government to appoint the new ambassador in Cairo as soon as possible, said the Foreign Ministry's spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid.
The top Italian diplomat also hoped the coming period would see stronger relations between Egypt and Italy in various fields.
Shoukry, for his part, welcomed the Italian government’s request to return its ambassador, saying that Egypt would also seek Italy’s approval to nominate Hisham Badr as its new envoy in Rome.
Italy recalled its envoy following the murder of an Italian student in Egypt last year.
Giulio Regeni, 28, vanished from the streets of Cairo in January 2016. His body was discovered in a ditch on the outskirts of the Egyptian capital on February 3.
The two ministers agreed on the importance of accelerating the approval of appointing the two ambassadors in order to return the momentum of the Egyptian-Italian relations, the spokesman added.
