Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the United Nations Vladimir Safronkov, stressed that all the criteria of the committee charged with discussing the constitution, including its internal structure and rules, should be decided by the Syrians themselves and the only way to make the committee effective is not to impose any dictations on them.
Speaking at a UN Security Council session on the situation in the Middle East on Monday evening, Safronkov said that Moscow has been seeking progress on the political track as part of the implementation of what the Syrians agreed upon at the Syrian-Syrian national dialogue conference held in Sochi.
He pointed out that instead of raising questions, the international community should make joint efforts to accelerate the political solution to the crisis led by Syria .
Savronkov noted that his country is confident that the new UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen will focus his efforts on a solid ground provided in Sochi, Astana and Geneva.
He made it clear that most of the Syrian territories were liberated from terrorism, expressing his country’s concern over the behaviors of the terrorist organizations in Idleb, which undermine the Sochi agreement on the province.
The Russian Diplomat demanded the United States to end its illegal occupation of Syrian territory east of the Euphrates and stop the crimes of the “international coalition” it leads, which caused hundreds of casualties.
He called for an investigation into these crimes and the atrocities committed by the coalition in al-Raqqa where recently mass graves containing hundreds of bodies were discovered.
