Gaza - Kamal Alyazegi

Hamas closely-related Alresalah-net newspapers published surprising story about the captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who has apparently decided to fast the month of Ramadan and imitate Muslims. He abandoned his Jewish traditions in a bid to forget his government which sacrificed and forgot about him. The story said that: “the old saying goes ‘whoever lives with a nation for 40 days becomes one of them,’ and it seems that this saying has become true in Gaza, and specifically in the case of the captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. He has lived with his captor’s al-Qassam Brigades for over 5 years now, and some believe that he may be too shy to ask them for food, even though they always attend to his needs. On the second day of Ramadan, Shalit decided to forget about his government which has “forgotten about him and doesn’t care about his case anymore” and to leave all his Jewish traditions and roots behind. Instead he has chosen to follow in the footsteps of Muslims after what he had seen of good treatent from his captors even when they are fasting.   Shalit has become this way because he longer hears anything about him in the news on Israel One TV, as his government is currently busy with the protests in Tel Aviv against overly priced accommodation; which led him to feel quite depressed and losing hope in being freed by his government. He even now says: “Shalit wants the regime (Israeli) to fall.”   Shalit’s is now one and a half month into his 6th year of captivity and has been put in the Karam Abu Salem military camp, East of Rafah in Gaza. He was captured during a dispersive operation he was part of where two resistance martyrs died and a number of Israeli officers and soldiers. Since he has been captured, two Israeli governments have come into power and one violent war has taken place in addition to hundreds of negotiation session with Palestine (Mediated by Egyptian and German and Western governments) asking for the return of Shalit in exchange for 1000 Palestinians who were captured by Israel and put away in prisons for years. As Shalit was not released the Israeli prisons have decided to tighten their grip on Palestinian prisoners in an attempt to pressurize Hamas into backing out from their conditions.   The fact that this is the 6th anniversary for Shalit’s capture proves that the Israeli security system which they are so proud of and claim to be the strongest in the region, actually isn’t; a belief that is held by Ashkenazi, Diskin, Mofaz and Dagan and other leaders of the Israeli security forces in their confessions. For years Israel has put the narrow coastal strip under the microscope using strong satellites, balloons and spy planes, and besieged 1.7 million people in Gaza from all sides, with international help in the hope of freeing the two soldiers held captive.   Around 6500 Palestinian and Arab prisoners are held captive in Israeli prisons without anyone hearing their voices calling out for the help to the International Humanitarian Law Prosecutor, while Shalit’s name is mentioned in every occasion while he is someone who used his Tank to raid children.
