Prosecutors on Monday ordered the release of a police major general, six officers and eight non-commissioned officers pending investigations into the escape of inmates from a police vehicle in Cairo's Maadi district a day earlier.
The vehicle was transporting defendants in a case known in local media as "Helwan Brigades" from Police Academy in New Cairo, where they were on trial, to Tora Prison on Sunday night.
The Public Prosecution had charged the officers with negligence that led to the escape of inmates.
Helwan Brigades is a terrorist cell that targets police forces.
