The African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security Ismail Chergui underlined the need to prepare for a possible return, to Africa, of terrorists from troubled areas of the Middle East, APS reported on Monday.
Speaking Monday to the press, at the end of the 4th High Level seminar on Peace and Security in Africa, which was held over three days in Oran, Chergui said that “what is going on in the Middle East, such as Yemen, Iraq and Syria, concerns us too,” foreseeing the possibility of a return of terrorists to Africa and Europe.
“It is a hypothesis on which we must work,” he recommended, wishing that all the African countries and the neighbouring regions have the same interpretation of this security imperative.
In order to address such security situations, the Commissioner for Peace and Security urged the African States to strengthen the ways and tools to fight against radicalism and strengthen measures to protect youth against manipulation, particularly through electronic crime websites, which have ties to terrorist networks.
Prevention is also done through good governance and the implementation of development programmes and operational measures to dry up the funding sources for terrorist groups.
In this regard, he called to increase international cooperation, particularly through the strengthening of exchange of information and experiences.
