A declaration issued by the seventh meeting of the AU forum of the High-Level Retreat of Special Envoys and Mediators on the Promotion of Peace, Security and Stability in Africa, which was held in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el Sheikh, has endorsed a guide for the work of peace mediators.
The declaration comprises five main recommendations that serve as a guide for the mediation operations in Africa, including means of handling contemporary conflicts, Egypt's Assistant Foreign Minister for Multilateral Affairs and International Security Hisham Badr said.
The guide stressed the importance of building mediation skills in Africa along with offering needed resources and technical support for mediators to be able to do their missions.
It also pays attention to coordination between national, regional and UN mediation in order to bridge the gap between such mechanisms while dealing with complex conflicts.
The African Union Commission voiced appreciation and thanks to the Egyptian government for the warm welcome and the good organization of the forum, which is held for the fourth time in Egypt since it was launched in 2010, the Egyptian ambassador said.
