Cairo - Egypt Today

Talks between President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and visiting Uruguayan President Tabaré Vázquez mainly addressed regional developments, presidential spokesman Alaa Youssef said on Wednesday.
In statements, Youssef added that both presidents agreed on the necessity to intensify international efforts aiming to achieve a political settlement to crises in the region.
Both leaders also discussed efforts exerted by Egypt to combat terrorism and extremist thoughts.
President Sisi welcomed Uruguayan president’s first state visit to Egypt since the establishment of bilateral relations in 1932.
He also voiced hope that bilateral relations would be enhanced in the various domains, especially in food and agriculture.
President Sisi also welcomed that a free trade agreement between Egypt and Mercosur would be effective soon, a step which would have a positive impact on the trade exchange movement among the group’s member states.
He also hailed the role played by Uruguayan troops as part of the multinational peacekeeping force in Sinai since 1982.
For his part, the Uruguayan president voiced his country’s keenness on development of relations with Egypt in the various economic and trade domains, noting that the new Mercosur agreement would open new horizons for economic relations, especially in the fields of agriculture, animal wealth and energy.
Vázquez highlighted the importance of coordinating stances in international fora in light of the membership of both countries in the UN Security Council.
During the meeting, president Sisi reviewed the achievements with regard to a number of mega projects especially in the Suez Canal axis aimed to be a world trade hub that would target the Arab and African markets.
The Uruguayan president said he is accompanied by a business delegation to explore available investment opportunities.
By the end of their talks, Vázquez invited Sisi to visit Uruguay. According to the presidential spokesman, President Sisi welcomed the invitation.
