Japan's foreign minister says the US must consult with Tokyo before taking military action against North Korea from any bases on Japanese soil.
Fumio Kishida made the comment on Thursday during an Upper House committee meeting on foreign affairs and defense, NHK Radio Japan reported.
He was asked how the government would respond to possible US military action against the North.
He replied that the US is required to consult with Tokyo before using a facility or an area in Japan as a base to carry out combat operations.
He said he understands it is an obligation stipulated by the Japan-US security treaty.
Kishida cited bombings by aircraft, dropping paratroops into battle zones, and landing operations by ground forces as examples of military action.
He said decisions to hold consultations would be made on a case-by-case basis.
He added that the US has not so far sought Japan's consent to use a base for any military operations.
