Venezuela says it will withdraw from the Organization of American States (OAS) which President Nicolas Maduro's government accused of meddling in its internal affairs.
"We will present a letter of complaint to the OAS and we will begin a process that will take 24 months," to resign from the Washington-based grouping, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez said.
The OAS, which Maduro had previously described its Secretary-General Luis Almagro of being a dictator, held a meeting to call for a possible Foreign Ministers summit to debate the Venezuelan crisis.
In a letter to the permanent council of the Organization, Almagro called for the application of the American Democratic Charter to Venezuela and threatened to suspend the country's membership if it does not hold general elections "as quickly as possible."
