According to CNN, last month marked the first time in more than seven years that no U.S. troops died during an entire calendar month of combat in Afghanistan. Charts from iCasualties.org help to visualize the data. iCasualties allows users to distinguish between hostile fatalities and non-hostile fatalities, and between those deaths which occurred only in Afghanistan versus those that occurred in any theater of combat associated with Operation Enduring Freedom. The last hostile-fatality-free month for all of OEF and for troops in Afghanistan was January of 2007. In all, 2,315 U.S. military members have died during Operation Enduring Freedom since hostilities began back in 2001, according to iCasualties. Both CNN and iCasualties report that 14 deaths (hostile and non-hostile) have occurred so far this year, seven each in January and February.
