Interior Minister, Lt-General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa attended today the celebration of the Interior Ministry to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, in the presence of governors and senior government officials.
The minister expressed thanks and appreciation for the sincere efforts of the National Anti-drug Committee, hailing the achievements in the implementation of the five-year strategic goals mainly the reduction of supply and demand of narcotics. He valued the efforts of the team work that was chaired by Shaikh Abdullah bin Rashid Al Khalifa, as 79% of the strategic goals were achieved. This means the reinforcement of the general vision of drug-free society.
He asserted that Bahrain continues to confront drug-related issues by firmly dealing with drug dealers in accordance to the law. He highlighted combating narcotics and psychotropic substances was a joint responsibility by all through the activation of community partnership to achieve goals and control drug-related risks.
General Director of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science, Brigadier Abdulaziz Al Rumaihi expressed in a speech he delivered on behalf of the organising committee sincere thanks and appreciation to the Interior Minister for his support and backing to anti-drug efforts. He highlighted that from January to May 31, 18 KG of Hashish, more than 5.6 KG of Heroin, around 2 KG of methamphetamine, 18 KG of Marijuana and 3 KG of poppy seeds were confiscated along with large quantity of different psychotropic substances.
He highlighted that of total 605 cases were investigated and 570 suspects were arrested, while the efforts of the Anti-narcotics Directorate includes year-long awareness campaigns.
Judge Dr. Hatem Fouad Ali, Head of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in the GCC highlighted in a speech the efforts of the Interior Ministry and National Anti-drug Committee. He said that the United Nations has launched the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking to focus on the importance of joint efforts to deal with narcotics that harm society and youth. He hailed the partnership between the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the Interior Ministry.
The celebration included a documentary that highlighted efforts and achievements in the implementation of the National Anti-drug strategy since its launching by the Interior Minister and Head of the National Anti-drug Committee on 24 June 2015, that was followed with the formation of a work team to follow up the implementation of the strategy’s 24 goals in coordination with partners.
The celebration included honouring the ambassador at the Foreign Affairs court, Shaikh Abdullah bin Rashid Al Khalifa for his distinguished efforts and pioneering initiatives during his work at the Interior Ministry, membership in the National Anti-drug Committee and Head of Maan (together) programme to fight violence and addiction. Brigadier Abdulrahman Saleh Al Sinan was also honoured for his contributions to the National Anti-drug Committee and Brigadier Mubarak bin Huwail for his dedication while he was working as the Director of Anti-narcotic. The members of the team assigned to follow up the implementation of the National Anti-drug Strategy and distinguished staff of the Anti-narcotics Directorate and Maan programme, and sponsored companies were also honoured. The Interior Minister hailed their anti-drug efforts, wishing the best in serving the nation.
