Cairo - Egypt Today

King Abdullah II of Jordan Monday voiced the kingdom's full support to the Palestinian people and their strife to establish an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital, Petra reported.
During talks with Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, in Ramallah, King Abdullah II also emphasized the importance of preserving the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem and not to violate it since it would have negative consequences on the region.
The two leaders had a one-on-one meeting followed by expanded talks attended by senior officials from both sides. The King stressed the importance of sustaining consultation and coordination and harmonizing positions between Jordan and the Palestinian people to revive the peace process towards finding a just solution to the Palestinian cause.
The talks also touched on the importance of working with the US administration in order to push forward the peace process and re-launching serious and effective negotiations between the Palestinians and the Israelis based on the two-state solution.
"Intensified efforts are needed to produce tangible progress in the coming period", said the King.
He also pointed out the commitment of US President Donald Trump to realizing peace between the Palestinians and the Israelis, emphasizing the importance of intensifying efforts to bring about political prospects to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
The King also said that based on the Hashemite custodianship of Jerusalem's Islamic and Christian holy sites, Jordan would continue protecting sanctities in the holy city through work with international community.
At a working luncheon, both leaders lauded the level of consultation and coordination between the two countries.
Further, the Palestinian President expressed appreciation for the efforts Jordan exerts to uphold the rights of the Palestinian people and their just cause in various international forums.
He also praised the essential role of King Abdullah II and Jordan in fully reopening the Al Aqsa Mosque/ Haram Al Sharif and defusing the recent crisis, stressing the importance of the Hashemite custodianship of sanctities in Jerusalem. The Palestinian leader also reassured King Abdullah II over the medical tests he underwent recently.
The King was accorded an official reception ceremony upon his arrival in Ramallah before both leaders reviewing of the guard of honor, while a military band played the national anthems of the two countries.
