Within the framework of their European tour, the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’ delegation, headed by Said bin Mohammed Al Fihani met with member of the European Parliament and member of the British Conservative Party Daniel Hannan in his office at the European Parliament headquarters in the French city Strasbourg.
Al Fihani presented a briefing on NIHR since its inception in 2009 and the measures taken to boost its autonomy and grant it more prerogatives to enhance its monitoring role of the government institutions and boost human rights by ascertaining that no violations are made.
Concerning severing diplomatic relations with Qatar by Bahrain, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Egypt, NIHR President explained that the issue is political and security-related and has nothing to do with human rights. He noted that the allegations made by the National Committee for Human Rights in Qatar about violating human rights by the countries calling to combat terrorism are baseless. He added that those countries calling to fight terrorism directed to take into consideration humanitarian cases of joint families in appreciation of the Qatari people by setting up hotlines to handle those humanitarian cases, should they exist, in order to preserve the family texture. He also ruled out any alleged siege on Qatar which led to human rights violations, pointing out freedom of movement in Qatar’s open space and territorial waters.
Al Fihani asserted that NIHR, being part of the global coalition of national institutions, is closely monitoring the situation to ensure no human rights are transgressed, calling on Qatar’s National Committee for Human Rights to avoid exploiting the human rights issue in the crisis which broke out because of Qatar’s funding of terrorism and the terrorist groups.
