Syria recognizes the state of Palestine within the lines of June 4th 1967 with East Jerusalem as its capital on the basis of preserving the legitimate Palestinian rights, Syrian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Monday. The statement, issued by Syrian news agency (SANA), also said that Syria will view the office of the Palestinian Liberation Organization in Damascus as an embassy as of the date of issuing this statement. The Palestinians will go to the UN General Assembly next September to get the recognition of a Palestinian state, based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. The Palestinian Liberation Organization opened its first bureau abroad in Damascus on November 1st, 1964.
