Kuwait has leading contributions to the distribution of publications for the blind either in print or through internet, journalist Ghanem Oudah said Monday.
Kuwait has been keen on helping the blind people soon after the second World War, Oudah said in a speech before a seminar about the role of Kuwait in distribution of publication of the blind, in print and in internet, held on sidelines of Kuwait Book Fair.
Kuwait introduced Braille, the writing system used by the blind and visually impaired, in a special section for the blind in the Islamic Studies Institute in 1947, he said.
Kuwait, added Oudah, established Al-Noor school for the blind in 1955.
Kuwait is a cultural beacon for the Arab world, he said.
"The society of Kuwait is one of the societies that supports the blind people. The blind did not suffer from the isolation or restriction. Through this support, the blind person succeeded in excelling at all levels including cultural, technical and economic ones," he said.
Oudah noted that Kuwait established a school for blind girls in 1956, and the Ministry of Education established in 1959 Ayoub Printing Press to pring books for the blind students.
