Abu Dhabi - Arab Today

Andrew Vaughan, Shell Vice President for Abu Dhabi and Kuwait and Country Chairman of Abu Dhabi, on Saturday said Shell has continuously supported Adipec, the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference, reflecting the oil company's commitment and the 75-year partnership it has enjoyed with the U.A.E., and supporting the country's oil and gas sector development through knowledge transfer and training as well as innovative solutions.
In a statement to WAM, Vaughan said Shell will continue to support and be part of ADIPEC as it celebrates an impressive 30 year-milestone.
"The ADIPEC conference programme is second to none in the industry with a technical programme that Shell continues to contribute to strongly. Shell has speakers from all of our business streams and from our operations across the globe traveling to Abu Dhabi to share our insights, knowledge and experience with our peers in the industry. And this year from the 400 leading international speakers 26 will be from Shell including Andy Brown, Shell's Upstream International Director, who will be on the panel of the Executive Plenary Sessions. This year the sessions will be exploring Innovation & Leadership and Technology & Sustainability." Innovation & Technology, Vaughan noted, is at the heart of everything that Shell does and it invests more in research and development than any other international oil company to optimise production from mature fields and explore and produce oil and gas assets from new fields.
"If we specifically look at sour gas field development, which is extremely relevant to the development of gas assets in Abu Dhabi today, Shell has invested heavily in innovation and has developed technologies that enable the safe production of gas from these complex fields. Shell's smart field technologies enable efficient and effective means of control and execution of projects by integrating people, processes and technology through real-time decision making." He said he was personally honoured to be invited to join the ADIPEC Executive committee for the second year, as this committee is "very much involved in overseeing the event to ensure that year on year it delivers on its promises and exceeds the expectations of all those attending." According to Vaughan, Shell has also developed knowledge series to bring the latest global advancements around the various themes of each show. As an energy leader, it is our duty to share technology advancements and best practices. In the past, Shell senior leaders in various fields including oil, gas, technology, education and innovation, marketing and sales have participated in discussions and on panels or have been keynote speakers at ADIPEC events. It's always an honour to be asked to speak or contribute and we always look forward to sharing our knowledge and exchanging ideas with others.
Speaking on Shell's plans for the onshore Bab gas field, Vaughan said, "It is too early to comment on production figures. We are currently in the planning phase of the Bab Gas Development; we drilled a test well over the summer and are satisfied by the results.
Shell was chosen by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) to participate in a long term joint venture (JV) to develop the major Bab sour gas reservoirs in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Shell will hold a 40% equity stake in the JV, with ADNOC holding 60%. This builds on our strengths as a leader in the development of sour gas fields. The timely development of Bab is crucial to meet the demand s of the U.A.E. for indigenous energy." Vaughan said Shell is extremely proud of the long and successful history we have had in Abu Dhabi since 1939. Shell, he added, values its partnership with the ADNOC Group of Companies and we hope to continue playing a role in helping the U.A.E. meet its energy needs through our skills and technology, as the largest international oil company (IOC) investor in new technology, and with our focus on national staff development and proven track record globally.
"In Abu Dhabi Shell was a shareholder in ADCO for over seven-decades. We are also shareholders in GASCO and we have also been selected by ADNOC in 2013 for the Bab Gas Development." Shell's main goal at ADIPEC, Vaughan noted, is to exchange ideas and experience from across the globe with audiences in the region and in particular with our partners in the U.A.E. in support of the development of oil and gas assets.
Shell's presence at ADIPEC is an important engagement portal for us in Abu Dhabi. This year, the Shell stand is a true representation of our long term presence in Abu Dhabi. We will feature our world-class technologies in Sour Gas, Enhanced Oil Recovery and Drilling Simulation Through its stand, Adipec will also celebrate our long term partnerships in Abu Dhabi. Shell's relationship with the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and with Adco started 75 years ago in 1939. Since then Shell has always played an active role in providing support to Adnoc and its group of companies. Our Stand in Adipec will feature the ADCO Drilling Imtiaz Initiative supported by Shell.
The Drilling Emtiaz initiative is a learning programme that targets well engineers during their formative years with specific focus on knowledge and skills required to perform adequately in their first operational assignment as drilling engineer, completion engineer or drilling supervisor. The program is divided in two phases; Round 1 phase focuses on acquiring basic well engineering skills and tests candidates on their ability to complete their work under time pressure; and Round 2 phase teaches well design and technical integrity assurance aspects of the drilling process.
The Shell stand will also showcase our long partnership with the Higher Colleges of Technology. The Shell Simulation Centre at HCT was set up to enable students to develop the necessary practical skills through the simulation laboratory equipment. Shell also believes that our work with HCT will contribute to the energy future of the U.A.E.. The Shell stand will showcase the ‘Made in the U.A.E.' fuel-efficient cars designed and built by HCT students. Earlier this year students from HCT Al Ruwais College and Abu Dhabi Men's College came 3rd & 4th place in the global Shell Eco-marathon Competition competing with 100 teams from across Asia and the Middle East.
The Shell stand will also feature Shell partnership with the Emirates Foundation which started in 2005 when the foundation was first established. Since then, Shell has been an active partner to the successful initiatives and programmes implemented by the foundation. "We are very proud of our partnership with the Foundation in Think Science Programme which aims to encourage students to study engineering and sciences. The Think Science Corner at the Shell stand will showcase remarkable projects designed by U.A.E. students." The Shell stand will also display our relationship with the Environment Agency, which is one of our oldest partnerships it has in Abu Dhabi. It started in 2000 with the implementation of the EnviroSpellathon programme in public and private schools in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Since then the programme was successful in reaching out to approximately 1.6 million students in more than 90% of Abu Dhabi schools. Our partnership with the Environment Agency is a model of the successful cooperation between a world class environmental organisation and an international oil company working together to the benefit of the nation.
Vaughan further noted that last year, Shell was very proud to see the Spellathon programme being implemented in Braille language to enable the visually impaired children to benefit from the programme.
