Some 4,000 Iranian Revolutionary Guards will soon be sent to Syria to support President Bashar Assad's regime, Iranian sources told The Independent. A decision to dispatch The Guards was made prior to Friday's 11th presidential elections in the Islamic Republic, sources told the British newspaper The Independent in an exclusive published Sunday. Pro-Iranian sources told the newspaper Iran is fully committed to preserving Assad's regime to the extent of considering opening up a new Syrian front on the Golan Heights against Israel. The Iranian sources said moves are constantly coordinated with Moscow, and that while Hezbollah is likely to withdraw its forces from Syria, aside from intelligence units who will remain there, Iran's support for Damascus will only grow stronger.
