Negotiations between the Palestinians and the Israelis in Cairo must produce an agreement on lasting, stable truce, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at a meeting with the chief Palestinian delegate, Palestine Liberation Organization Executive Said Arikat on Tuesday.
“We are very concerned about the situation in Gaza and around it,” Lavrov said. “We have been exerting efforts to actively support Egypt’s initiative.”
“The Egypt-mediated Palestinian-Israeli talks, which have been prolonged and are underway, should produce an agreement on long-term and lasting truce,” Lavrov said. “We are certain that this goal should be a good reason for starting a comprehensive settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.”
Lavrov said that Russia would be working actively to this end. “We have certain ideas on the matter that we would now like to exchange,” he added.
