121 athletes have died in Syria Damascus - George Al Shami The Free Syrian Sports Association has announced the death of kickboxer Ahmed al-Hamwi, a member of the Free Syrian Army (FSA). According to the organisation, al-Hamwi was shot dead by President Bashar al-Assad's snipers as he tried to move a colleague's body from a street in Homs, central Syria. It is believed that al-Hamwi had defected from the Assad regime's Syrian Sports Federation to join the rebels' sports body. Al-Hamwi, a talented kickboxer, dominated the local kickboxing circuit over the last few years, and had represented Syria at the Arab and World Youth Championships. His death takes the documented number of athletes killed in the Syrian conflict to 121.
